St. Clair County Overview
Overview
St. Clair County is almost 200 years old, one of the oldest counties in the state. The county is steeped in history and tradition, yet it is progressive and constantly growing. Its population as of 2008 was around 80,000 people and in that same year it was named the fastest growing county by percentage in the state of Alabama. It covers 634 square miles of mountains and valleys and has six municipalities. Its location is key to its growth as both Interstate 59 and Interstate 20 run through it. Because of this location and the work of the St. Clair County Economic Development Council, many businesses and industries are drawn to this area. Residents have the convenience of being located in a county that houses a community college campus, hospital, and numerous recreation opportunities. The county includes populated new subdivisions as well as historic homes and farm lands- something for everyone’s living choices. St. Clair County School System has 16 community schools- one to open soon in the Margaret/Argo area- an Alternative School and a Technology Career Center. Leadership includes an elected superintendent and seven elected school board members. Current enrollment is around 8400 and the system employs around 1200 people. Schools enjoy their community setting and have the advantage of large district cooperation. Capital improvement is booming with the growth of the county including renovations at Ragland High School, a new building for Moody Middle School, and the upcoming completion of the new elementary school in the Margaret/Argo area.
