John Pope Eden Career Technical Center

Welcome
The John Pope Eden Career Technical Center is centrally located in St. Clair County and serves high school students from across the county including the Pell City School System. The center is located just south of Ashville at the intersection of Highway 231 and Highway 411.

Plans for the John Pope Eden Vocational School, later changed to the John Pope Eden Career Technical Center, were formulated in 1971. Construction began in the spring of 1973. Students and faculty were first welcomed in the fall of 1974 and classes began. The administration and faculty of John Pope Eden Career Technical Center feel that their task is to prepare each student for a vocation that matches the individual abilities, aptitudes, and interests, and makes for a productive member of society. The skills, which are developed as a part of the educational process, are the means through which the student will apply the technical knowledge to the work of the selected occupation. The school also seeks to promote the development of reasoning, judgment, discernment, problem solving, and independent thinking.

Course offerings at the ECTC include Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Auto Collision Repair, Auto Service Technology, Business Education, Horticulture, Masonry, Welding, Cosmetology, Computer Electronics, Health Science, Woodworking and Coordinated Studies (Cooperative Education). All departments are Business Industry Certified. This certification assures each student that they are qualified for entry level employment in their chosen field. Admission is open to all high school juniors, seniors, and some sophomores who have a sincere desire to become competent in a skilled trade. A reasonable fee is charged for each course.

Students who attend ECTC are given opportunities to participate in para-professional organizations that include Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA) and Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). These organizations allow students to develop leadership skills as well as provide opportunities for students to participate in state and national competitions.

We plan to celebrate National Career and Technical Education week February 13-19, 2005. The theme of this weeklong celebration, “Career Tech: Training Tomorrow’s Workforce,” emphasizes the role career tech education and its business/industry partners play in helping youths and adults achieve career success in the new Millennium. The public is invited to visit our campus during this week to see the level of skills students gain here and how working with people from the business community, we’re preparing young people to be productive workers and community leaders.
