As Principal of Moody Elementary School I am proud of the relationship our school has with the surrounding community. We work very hard to ensure that our school, the staff, and the students are connected and aware of the community. Our community in turn provides us with endless support. The following list describes a number of programs which we participate in to fulfill our alliance with the community.Shepherd’s Supply – Shepherd’s Supply provides snacks each week for students who either have forgotten or cannot afford to purchase snacks each day. Local Churches – A number of local churches also provide snacks each week for students who have either forgotten or cannot afford snacks each day. Pennies for the Pup – A program in 2003-2004 in which students brought in pennies and collected over $300 to purchase a doghouse and other items for the St. Clair County Sheriff Department’s drug dog. The officer in charge and the dog visited the school’s students twice during the year. During the visits the purpose of the drug dog in St. Clair County was explained and a demonstration was made. Local Church Groups – A number of individuals from local church groups work daily tutoring students to improve both their confidence and their achievement. Secret Santas – Several classrooms and the school’s Community Outreach team work each year to provide food, clothing, and gifts for needy families during Christmas. Schoolwide Food Drive – The school encourage students to participate in a food drive each year. The school has raised over 1000 cans each year to be used by needy families during Thanksgiving. Community Angels – Community Angels are local businesses people who agree to sponsor a classroom for Christmas by providing the classroom needs as possible. Angels have provided items such as post-it notes, paper, pencils, printers, and tabletop desks. Celebrity Reader Day – Celebrity Reader Day takes place once a year during National Children’s Book Week. Members of the media, the sports world, and local celebrities from the community are invited to come and read to a classroom and share their love of reading. Around 75 readers take part in the event each year. Family Reading Night – Family Reading Night is held each month in the library media center. Parents and students are encouraged to come from 6:00 until 8:00 and take part in the event. The nights include such events as September’s annual event, the Moody High School Blue Devil Tailgate Party, in which football players and cheerleaders from the high school come in uniform and read to students and siblings. Popcorn and sodas are served. Moody High School Tutors – Tutors from Moody High School are allowed to take part in a tutoring program. Students receive credit and come to tutor each day. St. Clair County Correctional Institution - Inmates from St. Clair County’s Correctional Facility were allowed to work during the summer months with the school’s administrative staff to provide help painting and repairing the school’s grounds and building. Home Connection – MES’s Home Connection is a newsletter that is sent home at the close of each school week containing information about school happenings and events.. The newsletter is also translated and sent home with all ESL students for their parent’s convenience. Tee Off for Reading Golf Tournament – The school’s golf tournament is held each year with the help of the school’s advisory board to provide the school and its teachers with additional funding. Around 100 participants take part in the event each year. Teachers normally receive around $100 to be used in their classroom. Student Supply Bank – A student supply bank is kept at the school with donations from individuals and local churches containing pencils, crayons, backpacks, etc. Families are told about the service and students may come at any time to gather items they might need in the classroom and cannot afford. Arts in the Park Celebration - The Arts in the Park Celebration is held each spring to showcase student artwork and achievements. Local artisans are invited and attend to display and demonstrate their work. Parents are encouraged to attend. Red Ribbon Week – MES participates in Red Ribbon Week each year to provide students with an understanding about drug abuse and prevention. The program’s activities encourage the “Just Say No” attitude. Book Fair – Book Fair is held twice a year to provide students with literature at reasonable prices. Parents are invited to attend. Junior Achievement – The Junior Achievement program takes place each spring at MES. Volunteers from the community as well as high school students take part in the program. Each classroom receives a volunteer to direct the program. Extended Day Program – The extended day program is available to parents at a minimal cost to provide daycare after school each day until 6:00 pm. Students must be registered to attend. STAR Ambassadors – Third grade students are selected each year to take part in the school’s ambassador program. The program includes a safety patrol, morning news crew, art club, chime choir, garden club, and library aides. The students participate in the program either daily or weekly. Parenting Day – The school takes part each year in the state’s Parenting Day. Parents are encouraged to attend and hold conferences with their teachers or shop in the school’s book fair. Open House – Open House is held each fall to provide parents with a glimpse of what goes on in their child’s classroom each day. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend. Meet the Teacher Night – Meet the Teacher Night is held at the end of the summer each year to provide parents with the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and deliver supplies. Parents and students are invited and encouraged to attend. |
