Yearbook Staff: Sponsor is Ms. Lori Jackson and Ms. Jennifer Stribling The yearbook staff at MMS is comprised of the best of the best. Each student is hand selected by peers and teachers. The staff members work together as a team to create a yearbook that is both memorable and creative. It requires extra time outside of school for members to complete tasks. They learn skills such as sales and advertising, creative thinking, decision making, cooperation, teamwork, working well under pressure/deadlines, public relations, etc. We are proud to lead these students as they create a yearbook that will be a treasure for years to come. SWATT: Sponsor is Ms. Sara Wendt SWATT means “Students Working to Assist Teachers with Technology.” These students are carefully chosen for this club to help teachers in the classroom and in the lab. They must be recommended by their teachers and complete an application. They must then be approved by the sponsor. Ambassadors: Sponsors are Ms. Trisha Gill and Ms. Amy Bynum BookWorms: Sponsor is Ms. Mary Morton. Members of the BookWorms are from grades 4-6. We have monthly meetings where we discuss books read each month. Sometimes we read books with themes such as mysteries or fantasies. We also have written to authors, written to pen pals, and participated in other book-related activities. Foreign Language Club: Sponsor is Ms. Lana Cornelius. Foreign Language Club meets monthly. It is one of our largest clubs because grades 4-6 may participate. Each year, there are 75 to100 applicants; however, there are usually about 40-50 participants at each meeting. At the monthly meetings, students learn about foreign cultures and languages through guest speakers, slide programs, videos, and the Internet. Students also participate in a pen pal program, and each year sponsor a school-wide culture fair. Because of this club, students have a greater appreciation of their own heritage and the heritage of other cultures. Environmental Club: Sponsor is Ms. Mary Morton. The Environmental Club is our newest club. The goal of the Moody Middle School Environmental Club is to encourage our students to become interested in learning more about the environment. To accomplish this goal, the club encourages members to take part in environmental activities in and around the school campus. By taking part in activities such as recycling, beautification projects, and various tasks aligned with the EPA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, we endeavor to inspire our students to want to make the earth a cleaner place to live, as well as help to protect the air, water, and land. Scholar Bowl Team: Sponsor is Mr. Tommy Smitherman. Scholar Bowl is a team of students who participate in tournaments with other schools in the area. They are asked questions about many subjects, which are presented in what is much like a “game show” format. The students have buzzers and try to buzz in the fastest in order to have the chance to answer questions about history, math, the arts and sciences, current events, and religion among other things. The main thing about scholar bowl is learning to work as a team, exhibit good sportsmanship qualities and, most of all have fun! Office Aides: Sponsor is Ms. Wendy Stephens. The office aides are chosen to work in the office. They must have excellent grades and good character. Library Pages: Sponsor is Ms. Lana Cornelius. Academic Boosters Club (ABC) Moody Middle School parents are invited to participate in our local parent and teacher’s booster organization. We welcome parents who volunteer their time as a part of our ABC and as room mothers. Our boosters provide our school with many needed items through their fundraising activities throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your child’s teacher by email, phone, or letter. MMS Media Center The mission of MMS Media Center is to prepare students for life-long learning, informed decision-making, a love of reading, and the use of information technologies. Schedule Moody Middle School features an "open-access" media center. Students may come to the media center at any time-individually, in small groups, or with their entire class-to check out and return materials, to read for pleasure or information, to hear stories, or research topics for reports, using a variety of resources. Our library is very important for both teachers and students. The library is also used for club meetings, faculty meetings, and other school events. We are also a Renaissance Learning school. Our teachers and students use
Accelerated Reader, STAR, STAR Math, and Perfect Copy. The media center and
computer lab are used often because of our emphasis on reading. Students are limited to the number of items for their grade level: 4th and 5th, 2 books; 6th, 3 books. Students may keep items for two weeks; however, they are encouraged to return the books to the media center when they are finished. Fines for overdue books are 5 cents per day up to $1.00 per book. Students who lose or damage books beyond repair will be charged the replacement cost of the book. Parents may give permission for their children to check out more books while lost books are being sought by contacting Mrs. Cornelius. Awards Day Moody Middle School holds an Honors day Program at the end of each nine week grading period. Students are recognized for being Honor Roll students, Terrific Kids, and good citizenship. Student winners of other contests and activities are also recognized. These activities include the following: States and Capital Bee, Multiplication Bee, Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, History Fair, Science Fair, and various poster and essay contests. |
